A Night to Remember H-2 11Jan 1961
Bubble Busters

Recollections of H-2
This is a summary of my experiences at H-2 during 1959. Some of it was based on letters that I had written home to my parents while I was assigned to Langanes AFS. The account also includes the four months that I spent at Keflavik in the NATO IDF headquarters. Written and submitted by Jerry Tonnell, 50th Anniversary Iceland Radar Historian.

Distinguished Service Shaft
At a somber LORO (Langanes Officers Recreation Organization) ceremony, on the 7th day of May, 1959, this document "Distinguished Service Shaft" was presented, in the presence of others, by 1st Lt Willie (Bong Chow) Hee to 1st Lt. Charles Towner. It was presented exactly one month before Lt Towner's DEROS Date.

The document is signed by Capt. D.O. Phillips, Sherman S. Miller, Joe F. Bosworth, William B.C. Hee, Robert E Fitzgerald, Gerald H. Tonnell, John W. Nesmith and George A. Casino.

The main body of text reads:

"Be it known to all who shall view these presents,
1st Lieutenant Charles Lane Towner
Was hereby awarded the Distinguished Service Shaft
for his outstanding acceptance of duty which at least one
time caused him to feel the shaft buried to hilt and did
not flinch when it was broken off. Further more he walked
from the field of honor in a soldierly and stately manner
assisted only by the lodged piece of shaft. This award is fur-
ther honored by at least two of the following merits:
.. He at not time knew the shaft was in the hand of him who
shoved it.
.. He will not hesitate to give the shaft to the one who gave it.
.. He was in the service long enough to know the shaft would break.
.. He still smiles at him who broke it-knowing there'll come a time.
.. He will soldier diligently so he may present a shaft to someone.
.. He will not slump until the remaining piece is removed.
His most outstanding merit for this award is thus:
(written by Wm B.C. Hee) Extention to DEROS Date
Supply Officer at H-2
Given at Langenes Air Force Station, Iceland
This 7th Day of May 1959
These witnesses certify that the above named redipienht did well receive the shaft:
